Indian cricket legend Kapil Dev has heaped praise on Virat Kohli, calling him the greatest among greats when it comes to One Day International (ODI) run chases. The former World Cup-winning captain lauded Kohli’s unmatched ability to absorb pressure, control the innings, and steer India to victory in high-stakes games.
A Chase Master Like No Other
Kohli’s reputation as the ‘chase master’ has been built on years of consistent performances in ODI cricket. With over 13,000 runs in the format and a remarkable average in successful run chases, he has often been the backbone of India’s batting lineup. His ability to time his innings perfectly, accelerate when needed, and remain composed in tense situations makes him one of the finest batters in the history of the game.
Kapil Dev, who himself was a game-changer in his era, believes that Kohli stands out even among the greatest chasers in the history of cricket. “Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni, and many other legends have won India numerous games, but when it comes to chasing in ODIs, Virat Kohli is simply the best,” Kapil stated in a recent interview.

Kohli has numerous records to his name in ODI chases:
- Most centuries (27) in successful run chases—more than any other player in history.
- A staggering average of over 90 in successful run chases.
- Multiple iconic innings, including his unbeaten 82 against Australia in the 2016 T20 World Cup and his 133* off 86 balls against Sri Lanka in 2012.
These numbers not only showcase his technical brilliance but also his mental fortitude in pressure situations.
A Legacy That Continues to Grow
Despite crossing the age of 35, Kohli remains in peak form, showing no signs of slowing down. His hunger for runs and unmatched fitness levels make him a dangerous opponent for any bowling attack. As India gears up for more crucial international fixtures, Kohli’s role as the chase master will remain vital for the team’s success.
Kapil Dev’s words solidify what cricket fans and analysts have long believed—Virat Kohli isn’t just one of the best; he is the best when it comes to mastering the art of run chases in ODI cricket. His legacy will inspire future generations, ensuring that the art of chasing remains an integral part of Indian cricket’s success story.
